Choral Day

choralday

Dear Choral Colleagues,

I hope this letter finds you well and embarking on a rewarding and remarkable academic year of great music-making and discovery in your choral classrooms.  As you may know, I am now beginning my second year here at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at UGA as the Director of Choral Activities.  After a great first year, I am excited to continue making music with the bright and talented singers at UGA, while renewing our efforts to make the Choral Department at UGA a meaningful extension of your choral classroom and curriculum.  To that end, we will be offering two on-campus events during the month of September that are designed to enrich your programs and the opportunities of your talented and most motivated singers. These include the annual High School Choral Day (September 28, 2011) and a new event, entitled The UGA All-State Choir Audition Boot-Camp (Saturday, September 24, 2011).

The UGA All-State Choir Audition Boot-Camp is a day-long workshop with the UGA Voice and Choral Faculty designed to help coach and prepare high school singers for success on the Georgia All-State Choir Auditions, as well as offer them a snapshot of life as a collegiate voice major.  This new initiative which will feature UGA Voice and Choral Faculty, and is designed to be a fun and informative day in which high school juniors and seniors can have intensive coaching and clinics in all of the musical and intellectual disciplines that are evaluated during the Georgia All-State Choir auditions.  Information and registration materials in pdf format are available at the links below.  The registration deadline for Boot-Camp is Friday, September 16, 2011.

Once again, The Hugh Hodgson School of Music will be hosting the annual High School Choral Day on Wednesday, September 28 at the UGA Performing Arts Center. This is a wonderful and unique opportunity for your best and most dedicated singers to rehearse and perform in our world-class facilities, to work with and make personal connections with our conducting and voice faculties, and to enjoy the fellowship and artistic camaraderie of the collegiate singers of the UGA Glee Clubs and UGA Hodgson Singers.

Additionally, you and your students will enjoy a brief concert presented by UGA Opera Ensemble, and teachers who bring students will also be afforded the opportunityto take part in Teacher Q&A Sessions held by members of the UGA music education and voice faculties.  Information and registration paperwork for the High School Choral Day, including all forms, a list of repertoire, and a schedule of events is attached as pdf files to this email, and will be posted on our website.  As always, the repertoire for the day-long festival is designed to give your talented students a variety of musical experiences.  The men will perform Randall Thompson's classic setting of The Last Words of David (TTBB), and the women will perform Bob Chilcott's setting of The Lily and the Rose (SSA).  The afternoon Choral Showcase will culminate with all singers performing the final chorus of Haydn's oratorio, Creation entitled The Heavens are Telling.  The deadline for the High School Choral Day registration is Monday, September 19th.

The High School Choral Day will be coordinated this year by UGA graduate conducting assistants, Jared Daugherty (jarodd13@uga.edu) and Jared Berry (berry.jared@gmail.com).  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Dr. Andaya, or either of these gentlemen.

As always, Dr. Andaya, the UGA Voice and Music Education faculty, and I are very eager to find ways to help you in your important work with Georgia's student musicians.  I hope that the All-State Choir Audition Boot-Camp, and the High School Choral Day will be mutually  inspiring and beneficial opportunities for us to work with one another.  Additionally, I hope to be a regular visitor in those high school choral programs that would benefit from a guest clinician or an extra pair of ears from time to time.  Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you in your classrooms, and I will make every effort to pay avisit.  Until then, Dr. Andaya and the entire faculty of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music join me in offering our best wishes to you in your music-making.

Sincerely,

Dan
