Graduate Assistantships in Music

General Information

Assistantships are awarded to graduate music students by either the Graduate School or the Hodgson School of Music. The number of assistantships awarded each year varies. Applicants who wish to be considered for assistantships must submit their applications by the Priority deadline of December 1.

Criteria

Graduate School Assistantships are awarded by means of a university-wide competition through nominations from the graduate music faculty based on applicant's grade point average, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general scores, and letters of recommendation.

School of Music Assistantships are awarded through a process of auditions, interviews, examples of academic writing where appropriate, grade point average, GRE or Miller Analogy Test (MAT) scores, letters of recommendation, and qualifications specific to the needs of the School of Music.

Assignments/ Stipend

Assistantships funded by the Hodgson School of Music are usually at one-third time, carrying a commitment of 13 hours per week. Stipends for these assistantships vary between $10,800 and $11,600 for the academic calendar (nine months), depending on the level of the student. Assistantships funded by the Graduate School carry higher stipends and usually have a 16 hour per week commitment. Students holding assistantships at the one-third time level (or greater) receive a tuition waiver; these students pay a reduced matriculation fee of only $25 and additional required fees (currently $1095) each semester.

Renewals

Graduate assistants are reviewed annually. Assistantship renewals are granted by the Graduate Music Committee based on academic performance, performance of assigned duties, needs of the department, and available funding. Graduate students are eligible for assistantships during the first two years of master's study and the first three years of doctoral study.

Application

New graduate applicants who wish to be considered for assistantships should complete the section on assistantships in the Hodgson School of Music online graduate application. (A link to this application is emailed to you after your application to UGA's Graduate School has been processed.) Be sure to provide evidence of relevant experience for each category of assistantship in which you express interest. Applicants applying for assistantships must have their applications submitted by the Priority deadline of December 1.

Continuing graduate students who wish to be considered for new assistantships should email Susan LeCroy, Graduate Programs Administrator, to request consideration. Please include in the email supporting evidence of relevant experience for the desired assistantship(s). Emails should be sent by December 1.
