General Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a master's degree (or the equivalent) in music from an institution accredited by the proper regional accrediting association; a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for all undergraduate work, and a 3.5 cumulative grade point average for all graduate work. Applicants must achieve satisfactory scores on the required entrance examinations.

Scores on the verbal and quantitative sections of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are required for admission as a prospective candidate for all graduate degrees with the following exceptions. The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) may be used in lieu of scores on the GRE for admission to the MMED, EdS, and EdD degree programs.

Your admissions application is reviewed jointly by Graduate Admissions and the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Part of your materials should be sent to Graduate Admissions and part to the School of Music:

Submit to the Graduate Admissions Office:

  • Application form and a $50.00 application-processing fee, non-refundable. For domestic students, this application is due by July 1 for fall semester, November 15 for spring semester, April 1 for May and extended summer sessions, and May 1 for the summer semester. For foreign students, it is due by April 15 for fall semester, October 15 for spring semester, and February 15 for the summer term.
  • Two official transcripts (in sealed envelopes) from each institution of higher education attended, except the University of Georgia
  • Official test scores submitted from the testing agency directly to the Graduate School
  • Georgia residency application (if appropriate)
  • Additional materials required of international applicants

Degree-Specific Admission Requirements

Note: After admission and prior to registration, all doctoral degree students are required to take diagnostic examinations in music theory, music history and literature, and keyboard skills. These examinations are conducted each semester during phase two registration. The examinations are used to assess the general readiness of the student for study at the master's level. The needs of the individual, as determined by the examination, may be met by:

  1. enrolling in appropriate courses for credit or audit;
  2. independent study;
  3. tutorial.

Credit earned in undergraduate remedial courses is not applicable to degree requirements.

Doctor of Musical Arts: Music Education

Applicants must have a minimum of two years experience as a full-time teacher and must complete an on-campus interview with the graduate music education admissions committee. Prior to the interview, the following is submitted to the Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music: a detailed description of the applicant's teaching and other professional experiences with supporting documentation such as course syllabi, teaching materials, concert programs, articles, etc.; a 500-1000 word sample of the applicant's writing style. This may be in the form of a written review of an article from the current music education literature or an essay on a music education subject which is of interest to the applicant. Master's thesis, published articles, etc., are also accepted.

Doctor of Musical Arts: Composition

Applicants must submit a portfolio of original compositions and recordings of quantity and quality equal to that required for the degree Master of Music in composition. The applicant's applied music background and experience also should be equivalent to standard requirements for admission to graduate study in composition at the master's level.

Doctor of Musical Arts: Performance

Applicants are required to complete an on-campus interview and to present a public vocal or instrumental recital/audition. The recital/audition should be equivalent to the solo recital required for the degree Master of Music in performance. To see the full audition requirements, see audition requirements.

Doctor of Musical Arts: Conducting

Applicants are required to submit a high-quality audio/video recording of the applicant conducting a rehearsal or performance of literature of the applicant's choice (facial view preferred). After review of the submitted materials, selected candidates are invited to the campus for an audition/interview which includes:

  1. A conducting audition in which the applicant rehearses and conducts a university ensemble using repertoire selected by the conducting faculty. An aural acuity test is also administered.
  2. An interview with the conducting admissions committee. Topics include the literature rehearsed in the audition, choral and/or instrumental techniques, repertoire, and personal goals.

The committee may request a recorded or live audition on a principal instrument depending on the education and professional experience of the applicant.

Doctor of Education: Music Education

Applicants must have a minimum of two years experience as a full-time teacher and must complete an on-campus interview with the graduate music education admissions committee. Prior to the interview, the following is submitted to the Coordinator of Graduate Studies in Music: a detailed description of the applicant's teaching and other professional experiences with supporting documentation such as course syllabi, teaching materials, concert programs, articles, etc.; a 500-1000 word sample of the applicant's writing style. Doctor of Philosophy: Music

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree which includes at least 20 hours of work in the chosen field of concentration. The candidate must submit a representative writing sample, preferably a master's thesis or published articles. Reading knowledge of a least one foreign language is a requirement if the candidate wishes to concentrate in musicology.
