Graduate Assistantships in Music

General Information

Assistantships are awarded to graduate music students by either the Graduate School or the School of Music. The number of assistantships awarded each year varies.

Criteria

Graduate School Assistantships are awarded by means of a university-wide competition through nominations from the graduate music faculty based on applicant's grade point average, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general scores, and letters of recommendation.

School of Music Assistantships are awarded through a process of auditions, interviews, examples of academic writing where appropriate, grade point average, GRE or Miller Analogy Test (MAT) scores, letters of recommendation, and qualifications specific to the needs of the School of Music.

Assignments

School of Music graduate assistants assignments range from seven to thirteen hours per week. For more information, refer to the Assistantship Descriptions.

Stipends

The stipend for graduate assistants for the ten-month academic year (2008-09) is $10,545 at the Master's level; $11,250 at the doctoral level. Tuition for students on 13-hour assistantships is $25 per semester. Assistants are also required to pay fees of $563 per semester.

Renewals

Graduate assistants are reviewed annually. Assistantship renewals are granted by the Graduate Music Committee based on academic performance, performance of assigned duties, needs of the department, and available funding. Graduate students are eligible for assistantships during the first two years of master's study and the first three years of doctoral study.

Deadlines

The application deadline for Graduate School Assistantship is January 15; the School of Music Assistantships deadline is February 1. It is strongly recommended that the GRE be taken during the summer or fall to insure adequate time for the Graduate School to receive the test results.

Auditions

All applicants for the degrees Master of Music (MM) or Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) must audition for admission to the School of Music. Applicants for graduate assistantship may have additional requirements. Please see Assistantship Descriptions. regarding requirements for each assistantship.
