Assistantship Descriptions

Band

Duties: Assist with rehearsal and managerial duties of the marching and symphonic bands.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Masters' degree; marching band experience; competent performer on a band instrument; experience in conducting.

Audition: Submit examples of show designs for marching band and/or concert performance programs. Interview required. Contact the to arrange an interview and conducting audition.

Orchestra/Strings

Duties: Perform in orchestra and other ensembles; assist with managerial duties of orchestra; possible assignment to the Pre-College String program depending on interest and qualifications.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree; competent performer on violin, viola, cello, guitar or double bass.

Choral

Duties: Assist with rehearsal and management of one or more choral organizations.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree; experience and competence in choral conducting.

Voice Class

Duties: Assist with voice classes.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree; with voice as the principal applied area.

Class Piano/Accompanying/Pedagogy

Duties: Assist with piano classes for non-keyboard majors; accompany student recitals.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree with piano as principal applied area. Knowledge of piano pedagogy. For accompanying, experience as accompanist with outstanding ability to sight-read.

Theory

Duties: Assist with teaching of lower division music theory and ear training courses.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree with a strong background in music theory.

Audition: Approval by the theory committee. Composers should submit scores and tapes of original compositions, preferably from the Bachelor's or Master's degree recital, to the . Non-composers should submit strong evidence of excellence in music theory.

Music Education

Duties: Assist with teaching music fundamentals and methodology classes for education majors; assist with student teacher supervision when qualified.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree. Enrollment in music education degree program. K-12 teaching experience preferred.

Musicology/Ethnomusicology

Duties: Assist with music history and literature courses; teach classes for non-majors, if qualified.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree. Strong background in music history and literature.

Performance

Duties: Assist with instruction in brass, percussion, strings, woodwinds and voice as appropriate and perform in School of Music organizations and ensembles. Other duties assigned as appropriate.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in music and outstanding performance ability.

Special Performance Assistantships

The School of Music provides assistantships for candidates with outstanding performance skills. Applicants for these assistantships are selected by special audition.

Five performance assistantships are available in brass. Assistants perform in the graduate the brass quintet and appropriate major ensembles. Interested candidates should contact regarding requirements and availability.

Four performance assistantships are available in strings. Assistants perform in the Arco Chamber Orchestra and the University Symphony. Interested candidates should contact regarding requirements and availability.

Computers in Music

Duties: Assist with the management, maintenance and development of Computer Assisted Instruction programs.

Qualifications: Bachelor's or Master's degree, with a background in Computer Assisted Instruction and experience in multi-media formatting of Macintosh computers.
