Opera Ensemble

burch_120The University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music Opera Theater is a vital and rapidly growing program designed to prepare the young singing artist for a career in the professional opera world. Since 2006, under the direction of Frederick Burchinal, a twenty year veteran with the Metropolitan Opera, the opera program at UGA has grown to provide students numerous performance and development opportunities during the academic year.

The opera ensemble also functions as a vital component of the Athena Grand Opera, a resident opera company in the University and community. During the 2007-2008 season, three productions fully staged with orchestra, sets and costumes of THE MIKADO, AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, and LA TRAVIATA were presented in the 2200 seat Classic Center theater utilizing primarily the UGA opera ensemble supplemented by invited, internationally known, artists singing some of the leading roles and directed by nationally recognized guest stage directors.

For more information, visit the Athena Opera website.

Admission to the Ensemble is open to any University of Georgia student by audition. The Hugh Hodgson School of Music offers to Master and Doctoral candidates the possibility of full assistantships that provide full tuition and a yearly stipend. Singers interested in either the graduate assistantships or the undergraduate opera program should contact the Director of Opera, Frederick Burchinal for further information.
