Levon Ambartsumian

Levon Ambartsumian, UGA's Franklin Professor of Violin, was previously on the faculty at Indiana University, Bloomington, and was a professor at the Moscow Conservatory from 1978 to 1993. As a student, he studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Felix Andrievski, Yury Yankelevich, Leonid Kogan, and Igor Bezrodny. He has been the first prize winner in the 1977 International Violin Competition in Zagreb, prizewinner in the 1979 Montreal International Competition, and winner of the 1981 All-Union Violin Competition in Riga.

Ambartsumian has been distinguished as an Honored Artist of Armenia and an Honored Artist of Russia. He is the founder, conductor, artistic director, and frequent soloist of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra, now based at UGA. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at UGA, Ambartsumian continues to perform and present master classes throughout Europe, North America, and Korea.
