Lynch guest-conducts U.S. Army Field Band

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Director of Bands John P. Lynch recently guest-conducted the Concert Band of the United States Army Field Band at a concert in Maryland.

From the Field Band:

The Concert Band of the United States Army Field Band had a different sound during Friday’s performance at River Hill High School in Maryland. The band performed a challenging program of 20th century American Music, featuring the music of Aaron Copland, John Mackey, and more. But the reason for the unique sound was not due to the difficulty. Instead, it had everything to do with the guest conductor.

Dr. John Lynch, Director of Bands and Professor of Music at the University of Georgia, was scheduled to work with the Concert Band for four days before the concert. When he arrived, however, he was asked to prepare the Concert Band in just three days.

“Be well and eat better…” (And listen to great music!)

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

The Utah Symphony’s Paula Fowler says of Puccini and La Bohème:

[Puccini] earned a name for himself, and some fortune, with his first successful opera, 1893’s Manon Lescaut. During the next three years while he composed La Bohème, he practiced a less fund-strapped style of Bohemianism. He established his own “Club la Bohème” of friends and colleagues who met in a hut and created rules such as “silence is forbidden,” “be well and eat better,” and “wisdom is not permitted, except in special cases.”

Come see the fruits of Puccini’s labor this evening at Hodgson Hall, as the UGA Opera Ensemble presents La Bohème. A few tickets are still left for this must-see performance.  Tickets are $18, or $5 for UGA students.
