Graduate Brass Audition Repertoire

Pre-Screening

All graduate programs in brass performance require pre-screening, so your application must be submitted by the Priority deadline of December 1. Pre-screening materials will be submitted online using Acceptd [1]. Pre-screening selections must include two contrasting works (or movements of works) of standard literature with piano accompaniment, plus one etude and three excerpts, as specified below.

Trumpet graduate pre-screening
  • Any etude by Charlier
  • Mahler: Symphony No. 5 (opening solo)
  • Respighi: Pines of Rome (off-stage solo)
  • Stravinsky: "Ballerina's Dance" from Petrouchka

Horn graduate pre-screening
  • Any etude by Gallay
  • An excerpt from a Strauss tone poem
  • A low horn excerpt from a Beethoven symphony or overture
  • A Horn I excerpt from a Brahms symphony or piano concerto

Tenor trombone graduate pre-screening
  • Any etude from Bitsch: 15 Rhythmic Etudes; Bordogni: Vocalises (Book II) ; or Bozza: 13 Caprices
  • Mahler: Symphony No. 3, mvmt. 1 (3 after Rehearsal 13 through Rehearsal 17)
  • Ravel: Bolero (solo)
  • Wagner: "Ride of the Valkyries" (pickup to Rehearsal 4 through 3 after Rehearsal 7)

Bass trombone graduate pre-screening
  • Any etude from Maenz: Zwanzig Studien; Snedecor: Low Etudes; or Blazhevich: Low Range Etudes
  • Haydn: "Achieved Is Thy Glorious Work" from Die Schöpfung (beginning to C)
  • Kodaly: "The Battle and Defeat of Napoleon" from Hary Janos Suite (5 after Rehearsal 5 to long pause)
  • Wagner: "Entrance of the Gods into Valhalla" from Das Rheingold (Rehearsal 80 to the end)

Euphonium graduate pre-screening
  • Any complete etude from Rochut: Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Book 2
  • Sousa: Stars and Stripes Forever (no repeats)
  • Schoenberg: Theme and Variations (Variation V; baritone part)
  • Grainger: "Horkstow Grange" from Lincolnshire Posy (beginning to m. 17; baritone part)

Tuba graduate pre-screening
  • Any complete etude from Rochut: Melodious Etudes for Trombone, Book 2 (down one octave)
  • Wagner: Overture to Die Meistersinger (RN J to RN L)
  • Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5, mvmt. 1 (RN3 to RN6)
  • Berlioz: Hungarian March (RN4 to 4 after RN5)

On-Campus Auditions

Students selected for an audition will be contacted by the appropriate applied faculty member. Graduate brass auditions will be held on January 20 and January 27, 2018. (In special circumstances, alternate audition dates can be arranged.)

The on-campus audition should include two standard works. Please choose works not submitted for pre-screening. Applicants can play with accompaniment for the on-campus audition, but it is not required. (Applicants choosing an accompanist are responsible for all accompanist fees.)
