PhD in Music with an emphasis in Music Education

The intent of the Doctor of Philosophy in Music with an emphasis in Music Education is to prepare students for the roles of teaching and research in higher education. Through developing an advanced understanding and application of research methodology, the degree is designed to promote systematic contributions to the field of music education.  Additional emphasis is placed on writing and speaking skills sufficient to ensure effective communication with other scholars, colleagues, and practitioners within the discipline and community.   

At least two consecutive semesters of full-time coursework must be spent in residence at the University of Georgia. Resident credit used to satisfy requirements for another degree cannot be used to satisfy the requirements for this degree. 

Applicants must have a minimum of three years of public school teaching experience and hold a master’s degree in music from an accredited institution or equivalent competencies. 

Everyone who completes the application process (including interview and/or audition, if required) is automatically considered for an assistantship. Graduate assistants receive a full tuition waiver and an annual stipend. Teaching assistants teach or assist in undergraduate supervision and university music education methods classes.  

Music education application materials include:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of purpose and research interests
  • Scholarly writing sample (such as a master's theses, published article, etc.)
  • Video upload of the applicant teaching or leading a rehearsal with a written reflection
  • Three letters of recommendation
