Admissions FAQ

General:

Do I need to be admitted to the university before being accepted into the School of Music?
No. You do not need to wait for a university admission decision before completing the School of Music application or audition process. However, admission to the School of Music is contingent upon being accepted to the university. All applicants must apply to and be admitted by both. Find more information about UGA Admissions here (https://admissions.uga.edu/), and School of Music Admissions here (https://music.uga.edu/admissions-overview).

Can I be accepted to the School of Music but denied by the university?
Yes. Because these are separate processes, admission to one does not guarantee admission to the other.

When will I receive my decision?
Decisions are typically released after university admissions decisions are finalized. For fall applicants, School of Music decisions are usually shared in early to mid March.

What happens if I miss a deadline?
School of Music application materials submitted after the deadline may be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on program capacity. However, the university does not accept late applications. You must submit your university application by the published deadline in order to be eligible for admission.

What degrees do you offer?
We offer a variety of undergraduate music major degrees, music minor programs, and certificate programs. Please visit the “Academics” page on our website for additional information: https://music.uga.edu/

Can I double major or minor in music?
Yes, but this depends on the degree program and scheduling feasibility. Contact us at musicad@uga.edu to discuss your specific goals.

I emailed but haven’t received a response—what should I do?
During peak times (especially audition season and summer), response times may be delayed. We appreciate your patience and will respond as soon as possible.

Who should I contact with questions?
You can reach the School of Music Admissions Office at musicad@uga.edu.
While the staff in the Music Admissions Office is out, please contact the faculty directly (https://music.uga.edu/directory/faculty) with any questions, or reach out to Dr. Brandon Craswell, Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies, at craswell@uga.edu. If your question cannot be answered over the summer, please reach out to musicad@uga.edu again August 1 with your message.

Auditions:

Is an audition required?
Yes. All music major degrees and music minor programs require an audition. Audition requirements are on our website: https://music.uga.edu/undergraduate-auditions.

When do auditions take place?
Auditions for fall admission typically take place in January and February during each admissions cycle. Auditions for spring admission take place during the preceding fall semester. Students interested in applying for spring admission must first email musicad@uga.edu to verify studio availability before submitting an application.

Can I audition on multiple instruments or areas?
Yes, but you must indicate this in your application and may need to complete multiple audition requirements.

Will I receive feedback on my audition?
Due to the volume of applicants, we are not able to provide individualized audition feedback.

Scholarships:

Are scholarships available for music students?
Music scholarships are available for prospective first-year applicants. All eligible applicants who audition are automatically considered for scholarship support.

Are scholarships available for transfer students?
At this time, School of Music scholarships are awarded to prospective first-year applicants only. Transfer students are not eligible for music scholarship consideration through the audition process.

When will my School of Music scholarship appear in my student account?
School of Music scholarships are typically applied to student accounts during the summer prior to the fall semester. If your scholarship is not reflected in your account, we recommend waiting until August 1 before reaching out, as awards may still be in the process of being posted. You can find more information about financial aid on the UGA Office of Student Financial Aid website: https://osfa.uga.edu/

Can I combine music scholarships with academic scholarships?
Yes. Music scholarships are awarded separately and can be combined with university academic or need-based aid.

School of Music Visits

Can I visit the School of Music?
Yes, we offer tours by appointment during the academic year (fall and spring semesters). Fill out the form on our website (https://music.uga.edu/visit-hugh) or contact Music Admissions at musicad@uga.edu to schedule a tour during the fall or spring.

Are visits available during the summer?
We do not offer official visits during the summer, as faculty and students are typically not on campus. You are welcome to explore campus, but guided experiences resume in the fall.

Can I meet with a faculty member during my visit?
When classes are in session, we can often coordinate faculty meetings, though availability varies.
