Hugh Hodgson School of Music professors Liza Stepanova and David Fung will open the 2018 Thursday Scholarship Series on 11 January at 7:30 p.m. with an unforgettable evening of piano performances in Hodgson Hall. The performance features works by Mendelssohn-Hensel, Granados, Bach, Ince, Liszt, Mozart, Villa-Lobos and Ravel, spanning 300 years of piano composition and showcasing their international reputations as concert artists.  Both musicians were newly appointed to permanent, tenure-track positions in piano at UGA this year.

Lamar Dodd students will join Hugh Hodgson students to collaborate on a joint research symposium and exhibition on March 8th. The 2018 MARS symposium expands the vision of the Musicology/Ethnomusicology Area’s longstanding Music Research Symposium to include our neighbors and frequent collaborators in the School of Art. This day-long student-run event welcomes submissions from graduate and advanced undergraduate students to present research related to music and/or art. Work presenting an interdisciplinary approach is especially welcome.

The UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music Holiday Concerts, a longstanding Athens tradition, will usher in the holiday season at the Hodgson Concert Hall November 30 and December 1 at 7:30 p.m.

The annual concerts, which are part of the Thursday Scholarship Series, will feature the UGA Symphony Orchestra, Hodgson Singers, Collegium Musicum, University Chorus, the Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs and the UGA British Brass Band.

The University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music will present a faculty series concert by Jaclyn Hartenberger, assistant professor of music, conductor and associate director of bands, on Nov. 13 in the Ramsey Concert Hall at 8 p.m.

The UGA jazz ensembles will take the stage for their annual fall concert in Ramsey Concert Hall on Monday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. The performance will feature jazz, swing and Latin pieces from yesterday and today, as well as a faculty soloist on trumpet.

The U.S. Army Brass Quintet will be at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music on Tuesday, Oct. 31, performing in Edge Hall starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Q&A session with the audience. This event is free.

"We are extremely fortunate and excited to have the premier brass chamber ensemble of the U.S. Army Band on campus to perform and interact with our students," said Dr. Joshua Bynum, associate professor of trombone and coordinator of this event.

The November edition of the Thursday Scholarship Series will join together the Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s best student wind chamber ensembles with their faculty counterparts in a program featuring works ranging from the Renaissance to the modern day. The concert will be Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall.

The University of Georgia will celebrate its myriad offerings in the visual, literary and performing arts this November during the sixth annual Spotlight on the Arts festival, which features nearly 100 events and exhibitions over 12 days.

Thirteen UGA Opera Theatre soloists, the UGA University Chorus and the UGA Symphony Orchestra join for two performances celebrating the works of opera master Giuseppe Verdi when the UGA Opera Theatre mounts its annual fall performance in Hodgson Concert Hall on Saturday, Oct. 21, and Sunday, Oct. 22.
