In 2020/21, the Hugh Hodgson School of Music established a standing committee for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB).  To better understand the School, DEIB committed to analyzing and publishing demographic data each academic year.  By more thoughtfully understanding the School’s population, we give more context to decisions about our offerings (curriculum, programming, repertoire, etc.), so that we might better reflect the experiences and backgrounds of our current students.

The demographic reports from 2020/21 revealed some inconsistencies in our applications, including options available for students reporting their identities.  Many of those issues were updated for 2021 applicants, including adding multi-racial category and updated pronouns.  Because of such changes, direct comparison between 2020/21 and 2021/22 data is not possible.  But tracking data moving forward will be possible.  We hope it will help guide us in cultivating a School of Music community more representative of the populations we serve.

We feel these are important steps in our efforts to create a more equitable place to live, learn, and make music.
